Scholarship awarded in Frankie's memory

Frank Mead, father of slain Novato teenager Frankie Mead, has established a scholarship in memory of his son. The first recipient is Novato High School senior Julian Wade. Wade received $2,000 to attend the Marin Education Fund's Summer Application Institute.
Wade was among 50 Marin high school entering seniors to graduate at the institute last Saturday at Dominican University of California in San Rafael.
The institute is a five day, college preparatory experience designed to facilitate college entrance for low
income, under represented students, many of whom are the first in their families to go to college.
Frank Mead said it was always his dream for his son to go to college and be the first in his family to go to college.
Frankie, 16, was fatally stabbed last New Year's Day during an altercation at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Frank Mead said in a press release that the annual scholarship " is a way of recapturing the dream that was taken from him, to help someone else go to college."
Mead, who owns Frank's Barbeque, told the Advance that he hopes to provide scholarships to three students next year.
Traci Lanier, with the Marin Education Fund, said Wade was selected for the inaugural scholarship because "we wanted a student who could capture Frankie's spirit." She said Wade is into sports and is very outgoing, as was Frankie. During the summer institute, students live in dormitories and receive instruction in the college experience. They learn how to obtain financial assistance, complete college and scholarship applications, and evaluate and select the best college for their needs. Students tour UC Berkeley and St. Mary's College.
Frank Mead said tax deductible donations to the Frankie Mead Scholarship Fund can be sent to the Marin Education Fund at 781 Lincoln Ave., Suite 140, San Rafael. Anonymous donations are being accepted at Circle Bank in Novato, Mead said.
